The Figurative Home

What’s a good user interface for a thermostat that wants to be more than just a thermostat, that wants to become a whole home interface?

A round object on the wall kinda says ‘thermostat’. Putting a big number in the middle of that round object really says ‘thermostat’. It also says ‘Nest’.

So, what could we do for a round touchscreen that’s on the wall, branded Honeywell Home, and ultimately connected to more than the HVAC system?

The ‘Figurative Home’ is a user interface metaphor and design direction for a ‘Whole Home’ UX and product offering. It was created for the Honeywell Home M5 Smart Thermostat announced at CES 2020.

I led initial concept definition and design direction, guiding a small team of designers and working directly with our company president and chief technology officer.

The idea is simple – reflect what’s going on inside and outside the home in a simple, charming and somewhat playful way. Touch the screen or turn the dial to make a change.

The Figurative Home UI was announced at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show with the M5 Series thermostats, winning a CES Innovation Award. More about the Honeywell Home M Series

”These new smart thermostats forever shift expectations of home temperature control. The intelligent home management system monitors air quality, water leaks, energy management and security. It’s a whole home guardian that helps save energy and simplify the smart home.”
